“It’s Never Too Late to Begin”: Donata Marzocchi on Visibility, Vitality, and Starting at 79
Age isn’t a limitation—it’s a challenge to meet with courage, humor, and lightness. Donata Marzocchi, 79, former literature teacher, mother of two, and grandmother of five, opened an Instagram account on a whim. Curiosity became a passion—then a profession. She now shares her story, her joy for life, and the power of communication in a world that often treats older people as invisible. Donata is anything but. She’s vivid, curious, and dreamy—and she reminds us that it’s never too late to begin again.
How did your Instagram journey start?
It began as a bit of a joke. I wanted to see what my grandchildren were doing on the platform. I posted a few photos and thoughts and never expected anything to come of it. Then it grew—into a daily habit and a wonderful surprise.
Did your years teaching literature help you as a creator?
Absolutely. Literature taught me that words are never neutral: they can bruise, but they also open worlds. When I write a post or reply to a comment, I’m not just typing—I’m building a connection. That’s my real strength, more than any technical skill.
Social media is “for the young.” Your response?
It isn’t true. Life doesn’t fit into age boxes. At 79, I still have much to give and much to learn. Used well, social media is a bridge between generations. I draw energy from young people and try to return it with experience.
How important is it to stay active and keep dreaming as you age?
Essential. If you stop, a part of you fades. Everyone needs a project—big or small. A hobby, a trip, a new friendship. Enthusiasm is the elixir of long life.
How do your children and grandchildren feel about it?
At first, they were amused. Now they cheer me on—and tease me, lovingly. My grandchildren teach me technical tricks; I remind them that life doesn’t end with a date on a document. Sometimes it starts anew when you least expect it.
Have you ever feared loneliness?
Of course. Most people meet loneliness at some point, especially later in life. The secret is not to let it prevail. Speaking, sharing, reaching out—those keep it at bay. For me, Instagram has been an antidote to silence.
What would you say to someone your age who feels “at the end of the road”?
Please don’t think that way. It’s never too late—to start a course, read a book, open an account, or fall in love. As long as we’re breathing, we can reinvent ourselves. At 79, I don’t feel finished. I feel en route.
Epilogue
Donata doesn’t fear time—she treats it as an ally. In a culture that equates aging with decline, she insists that each day can be a beginning. Her story invites us to keep seeking, speaking, and loving. Because life—even at 79—can be startlingly full.
