Kevin Fortune is a world-renowned hair and makeup artist. He has opened a new Hair Styling Academy that offers regular workshops for its students looking to better their skills in the profession and launch a career with the industry-driven experience that comes as part of the course.
Today, during London Fashion Week, I was given unprecedented access to its new premises a stone’s throw away from Oxford Street to photograph Kevin and his partner Martin work together in their new creative space and watch the hair of Men’s Fashion Stylist Suzie Street transform in to something incredible.
Suzie Street popped in for a late morning appointment before her show at 11.30am during London Fashion Week, her hair tied up and neatly kept. 45 minutes later, she left with a voluminous mane of beautifully prepared, curled and constructed hair, all a result of Kevin’s work. She explained that working in the industry where looks are everything, hair is one of the most important parts of someone’s look.
With Kevin’s focus on Suzie’s hair, he worked his magic and it’s easy to see his creativity come out in true form.
Kevin, wearing his Nike trainers and designer trousers, explained to me that there is a huge – but often misunderstood – difference between a hair STYLIST and a hair dresser. Many of the celebrities and high profile individuals with whom he works often prefer the safety and comfort of a stylist, who do not cut hair and, with a history in the fashion industry, can transform any cut into something that maintains the individuals’ style whilst making their hair a statement for any event, party, or day ahead of them.
Having trained previously among professionals and taking part in an expensive hair styling workshop, he’s built himself up from nothing and is now well respected, with a client list varying from people like Nick Grimshaw to La Roux.
THANK YOU SOOOOOOOOO MUCH to you and Alexander from both Kevin and myself!!! What a great great great article AMAZING – so please that you were happy to feature us – it truly is a great honour for us!
