Pregnancy and motherhood can take their toll on the body. As a new mom, you may notice all kinds of bodily changes. These may not be a concern to some women, but others can become deeply self-conscious of them. Below are some of the common beauty concerns that new moms have and how to treat them.
Stretch Marks
80% of women develop stretch marks during pregnancy. Over time these stretch marks can fade, but they often don’t go away completely. Can you get rid of stretch marks? Unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to completely eliminate them, however retinoid creams and procedures like laser therapy can greatly reduce them – and could be worth trying if stretch marks are a concern to you.
Postpartum Acne
Hormonal changes, stress and sleep deprivation can cause some new moms to break out into acne. While some new moms are very conscious of this, this acne fortunately often does not stick around. Washing your face and exfoliating may help to reduce this acne. If your acne is quite serious, consider talking to a doctor and see if you are a suitable candidate for other treatments like prescriptions topical creams.
Weight Gain
Some women gain weight during pregnancy and find it hard to shed these excess pounds once they become a new mom. Dieting and exercise is often necessary to shed the baby fat, but you need to be careful of what diets and exercise you take up. Generally it’s a good idea to avoid crash diets and extreme exercise. Instead, focus on portion control and eating healthy foods, while doing low-impact exercises (you may be able to do some exercises with your baby).
Sagging Breasts
After breastfeeding, some women may experience sagging breasts. Wearing supportive bras and maintaining a healthy weight may prevent this, but is not always effective. Is there a way to reverse breast sagging? An operation known as a breast lift is an option for those who are self-conscious. Otherwise, you can always try using a push-up bra or try changing the size/shape of your bra.
Loose Skin
Even if you don’t gain weight after pregnancy, you may still experience loose skin as a result of growing and losing your bump. When your body has healed, it may be possible to try some stomach exercises to help tone up your belly and tighten the skin. A tummy tuck of mommy makeover could also be a solution – this is a procedure that can help to tighten skin around the stomach.
Hair Loss
While not every new mom experiences it, stress from motherhood can cause some women to experience hair loss. This can be worrying, but it is thankfully only temporary – the hair does grow back. This phenomenon is known as telogen effluvium. Reducing stress and getting rest is key to helping hair grow back fast and healthy. Try to avoid using any harsh hair product until your hair has grown back fully.
Dry Skin/Eczema
Pregnancy and motherhood can cause all kinds of changes in the skin – while some women get acne, others may experience the opposite problem of dry skin or even eczema. Using moisturizers and topical steroid-based creams may help skin to heal. As with postpartum acne, this may only be a short-lived skin issue if you’ve previously never had eczema before.
