Why Do Women In Football and Rugby Dress Like Men

Why is it that whenever I watch female rugby players or football players that I think they should dress more gender appropriate on the field? As the co-founder of three online publications focusing on fashion, I find it offensive that this issue still has not been addressed. Who decides what a women’s outfit should look like and why does it look so much like the male counter part?

Is it sponsors or is it the kit supplier that decides what gets worn? It seems that if the sport such as football or rugby is male orientated, the sponsors or kit supplier for women simply choose unisex outfits.

For me, it’s all about the sponsorship control. Take a game like tennis and we see a completely different approach.

Do I need to say anymore. The ratings would certainly go up?

Women In Sports

Now today more so than ever, elite sports are crying out for more women to participate in male-dominated sports. Formula One is crying out for more woman? Ecclestone, 84, suggested the likes of Susie Wolff compete in the special series on Sunday morning before the main race.

“I thought it would be a good idea to give them a showcase,” Ecclestone said. “For some reason, women are not coming through – and not because we don’t want them. Of course, we do, because they would attract a lot of attention and publicity and probably a lot of sponsors.”

I wonder why such an elite sport is wanting more women to be involved. One of my thoughts are in the article I wrote over a year ago is this. We are simply as powerful as role model marketing species. Sex sells and we need women to be sexy on that track and to also illustrate that we are intelligent and able within our own DNA.

I mean how sexy does Susie Wolff naturally look both here and whilst driving? They certainly can spice her up a lot more. Come on Martini, think about the drink alone?

Woman In Tennis Leading The Way For Years

I’ve been a huge tennis fan for years. I can honestly say if there has been one sport who has embraced the inner and outer beauty of women in sports, it has to be tennis. Great examples are the likes of Maria Sharapova or the Williams sisters. You can say these ladies certainly showcase the DNA of women within sports. Both in looks, and in intelligence.

Why Men’s Sports Dictate The Way Women In Sports Dress?

I think in sports that are predominantly male orientated is that the rule of the fashion masses is still what gets chosen for the female outfit. Play a sport dominated by men and its sponsorship marketing, then ladies you need to dress like a man too. I think this is wrong, dated, and lazy. For me it does not send out a message to women that they can be feminine within these sports. You’re making us feel and act like men. We are equally strong mentally, not physically, it’s not in our DNA to be.

I know outfits that bring out the best for women will result in more women joining these types of sports, so we get rid of stereotypes like only tomboys join football. As the co-founder of MenStyleFashion, we are fighting against mindsets such as gays like ballet and men who dress well are gay.

So big sports brands, I think it is time to make some changes in this market and if you do not dare, I see a huge potential for Kickstarters to grab some market share by designing women-specific sports clothing. Let’s face it, us women love to buy paper fashion magazines. We love seeing and being inspired by the latest fashion trends. Why do you think the Williams sisters are always at the front seat of Burberry fashion catwalks? It’s simple. Who sits at the front seat can sell your fashion labels in a heartbeat.

What would be more enlightening for fashion is to see women in sports setting the trends and being super role models to other women. Inspiring up and coming girls and women that you can be feminine, sexy and sporty because it’s in our DNA.
