As the world instils in the throes of its Downton Abbey obsession, we thought it would make sense to again highlight some of the fashion accessory trends from the series. If you’re looking for a top-to-toe look, our Downton Abbey fashion inspiration article is your next stop!
Downton Abbey inspired accessories on the runways
The show had its beginnings in the Edwardian Era with an s-curve silhouette, Gibson Girls, long trains and large hats, but at the start of season 3 we find the Granthams in the year 1920. The juxtaposition between the two eras can be seen in the fashions of the Dowager Countess (played by Maggie Smith) and Lady Grantham’s mother (played by Shirley Maclaine). The former chooses to dress in the style of the older era, while the latter is ready to take on the fashions of the 20s.
Their choice of hats explains it all.
The Bowler
The bowler has had varying degrees of significance in British culture. They were popular among the working classes in the 19th century, but from the early 20th-century bowler hats were more commonly associated with businessmen working in the financial districts, also known as “City Gents”.
Maggie Smith As Lady Violet
Shirley Maclaine as Martha Levinson in the new style of 20s headwear and Maggie Smith as Lady Violet in an older style hat from the Edwardian Era.
For those who want to incorporate the Downton Abbey look into their wardrobe, remember the details are often in the accessories. Accessories are a great way to dabble with a new fashion trend without having to jump in with both feet.
